A Painting for Hollywood
I'm in an art show this Friday in LA! Carmen "Jane Dope" Acosta from The Beat Bee Sessions put the show together and asked me to be in it! It's called Eat Your Art Out 3, and it's benefiting Jane Dope's roller derby team. I wish I could go! It's at Meltdown Comics, HERE'S THE INFO!
Since it was for a roller derby benefit show I decided to stick with a roller derby theme (duh), but whenever I try to come up with an idea for a painting it's always violent or just really, really weird. In this case both.

It's 8" x 10" and done with colored inks. I finally used these Winsor Newton Drawing Inks that I've had forever. I found a cool dark blue frame that matched one of the colors I used perfectly, but I take terrible photos so you pretty much have to take my word for it.

And there's some doodles I did on the back. It was really weird mailing it out to Jane Dope, because she lives in Hollywood. It doesn't seem like people really live in Hollywood. It's like living in Disneyland or something.
While I'm showing that painting, here's a few more! These are just a few of the small paintings that people have ordered from me (for only $5!) recently. If you want one, just click the button over there -->!

iLuv

Since my comic today is just a big tease, I've decided to post my entry to Columbia's Acme Comics' anthology. The title for the anthology is called 'Awkward Moments,' so here's my 4-page submission:

Also, my friend from a few years ago (while me and Samantha were living in Flagstaff, AZ for a few months) Rafeal Tappia just started a blog! You gotta check it out, he's such a sick illustrator/designer/photoG yadda yadda yadda, but seriously, check it out: GIMMICKS.

The Gleaners

Samantha and Lindsay's show is called the Gleaners and it was awesome! They had a bunch of really sick artists in the show, like: Sam Flores, Kehinde Wiley, Lucong (who was at the show!), Iona Rozeal Brown and Titus Kaphar, to name a few of them. I didn't take a lot of pictures because it was crowded and the lighting was really bad, but I will the next time I go. It's up until the first week of March, so come to Denver and see it!

Bad Mood, Josh and Buster

Yesterday I got a letter from my cola buddy JOSH ZERANGUE, and inside of it was a tiny folded piece of paper that said 'open carefully,'and this is what was in it:

Wow! Whenever I see Josh's art, and hear him talk about it and explain it, it's like he's a REAL ARTIST. He has explanations and ideas behind all of his pieces, and works in a completely original way. He makes his new stuff (like this one he made for me) by inking up a small piece of Mylar, then he scratches out the image with an exacto knife under a microscope! That's why it looks like a small woodcut when you look at it up close (click on that second picture to make it bigger so you can see what I'm talking about)! Here's another example of this way of working:

It's about the same size as mine, done the same way. He scratched out the halftone pattern to make the image! That's such an awesome way to work. I can totally see these in some crazy gallery in NYC or LA. I can't wait to see more.
And while I'm putting some photos, we got another visit from our neighborhood cat Buster! Sometimes me and Samantha can lure him into our apartment so we can play with him for a little bit.

I love that guy!

Everyone has their flaws

I recently started listening to a new comics podcast called WAR ROCKET AJAX. I heard about it from Bryan Lee O'Malley's website (they guy that drew scott pilgrim) and have really enjoyed it. I just listened to the newest episode and noticed one of the hosts mentioned that he lives in Columbia, SC and that he was the manager of a comic book store! So I pretty much figured out that I have talked to him before, and actually I gave him a bunch of my mini-comics to sell in his store a while ago! Ha, I just thought that was pretty weird! Anyways check out that podcast if your into comics, hip-hop, and video games!

Taco Night

Check out this Toro Y Moi/Kid Trails viral video on Chaz's website or HERE. I don't know how they don't laugh when patrick starts TAYAT TAYAT GUHH GUHH-ing. And for awhile I was telling everyone about a really awesome website called Kitsune Noir, because every week a new artist makes a new desktop wallpaper for your computer/iphones. So I check back and Chaz submitted some custom Toro Y Moi wallpapers! I'm using the top one haha.

Chaz's record came out yesterday! I'm so excited, everyone should go buy it! You can get it at the label, RIGHT HERE, but for some reason I really want to buy it in a store. It's just more official, ya know? Anyways Congrats Chaz! You totally deserve it.
